Morris County Juvenile Detention Center Gavel Club

Empowering Youth Through Communication and Leadership

We are seeking a passionate Toastmaster to lead a transformative initiative at the Morris County Juvenile Detention Center. This is a unique opportunity to help young residents build self-confidence, develop essential communication skills, and discover their potential for success in life.

Leadership Opportunity

We’re looking for:

  • A Lead Toastmaster who may use this project to fulfill the requirements for the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) award.
  • Additional volunteers interested in completing a High-Performance Leadership (HPL) project for Pathways Level 5.

Program Overview

  • The facility serves Morris, Sussex, Hunterdon, and Warren counties.
  • The ages of the residents are from 15 to 21 years of age.
  • Resident population ranges from 5 to 20; currently (as of 10/01/2025), there are 12 young men and 1 young woman.
  • Programs are gender-specific; this Gavel Club will be male-only, with an estimated 10 participants.
  • The Center is evaluating whether participation will be mandatory or voluntary.
  • Gavel clubs use the Competent Communicator (CC) program, not Pathways (mandated by Toastmasters International).
  • Sessions will be scheduled based on class times, likely between 3:30–7:00 PM and will run for one hour.

  • Gain experience in club creation and management
  • Help youth discover the power of self-expression and confidence
  • Be part of a dedicated team of Toastmasters making a real impact
  • Deliver speeches in a new, meaningful setting
