Hello District 83 members,

Hope everyone is doing well in this difficult time as we cope with the daily challenges raised by the Coronavirus (Covid-19). I want to update you further on how this situation is impacting our district and events.

Speech Contests:
Toastmasters International authorized each District Executive Committee to determine whether they will continue to conduct or cancel Speech Contests for the 2019-2020 contest cycle. On Wednesday, March 18, the District 83 DEC met and voted to cancel the Evaluation and International Speech contests. It was a difficult decision with much discussion, and one that the DEC did not take lightly.

District 83 Annual Conference and Business Meeting:
Toastmasters has instructed all club, area, division and district events before June 1 to be conducted online. Each District must conduct its Annual District Council Meeting online, rather than in person, on or prior to June 1, 2020. As such, District 83 will hold a virtual business meeting on Saturday, May 16 at 9:30AM. We will hold district elections and conduct all business we would have conducted at an in-person meeting.  More information to follow on registration and proxies.

Due to the uncertainty of how long Covid-19 will remain a risk, we have decided to cancel the conference entirely and not hold it in the month in June. Anyone who has already registered will receive a full refund. The 2021 Annual business Meeting will be held at the Crowne Plaza in Edison and we will announce the date in the coming weeks.

Dues:
The Board of Directors has extended the March 31 dues renewals date to April 30, 2020. Clubs that meet the dues renewal requirement by April 30, 2020 will receive Distinguished Club Program credit for submission of on-time dues renewals for this period. If your club does not meet the renewal requirement by May 1, 2020, it will no longer be considered in good standing.
Online Meetings

Virtual meetings:
All clubs should try to have club meetings virtually. This may mean experimenting with some conferencing platforms such as Zoom, Webex, GoToMeeting or Google Hangouts. By the end of the week, the district will share tips and tricks with you. A good resource is District 2 https://bit.ly/2We0I1q. This is a great time to visit other clubs virtually and please check TM83.org where we will compile a list of clubs meeting virtually.

Please continue with your educational projects and speeches. Toastmasters International has been holding firm to the transition to Pathways date as July 1,2020. If area directors have not already visited your club in person they can visit during an online meeting. You may expect other visitors who can more easily connect online than in person.

Stefano McGhee, International Director from Region 9 has graciously offered to visit clubs' virtual meetings. If you'd like him to visit your club, please email him directly This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
