A crew of six AT&T Middletown Toastmasters captured the gavel from iCIMs during their one-hour lunchtime meeting. The Word of the Day was “sieze.” Aida Murphy led the team and served as the Grammarian, Paul Ireifej gave a humorous speech, and Annie O’Rourke evaluated an iCIMS speaker. Alexander Matos jumped in as Ah Counter, and Frank Schuck and Jessica Huang were back-ups. We thank our host, Eileen Kern, and the iCIMS Toastmasters for a great joint meeting! The spirit of the holiday season was in the air as Eileen Kern, Chelsea Pula, and Colin Grubb from iCIMS (pronounced EYE-sims) Toastmasters visited our neighbors at Old Bridge Toastmasters for their last meeting of the year. The word of the day was "inspire" and between the educational, entertaining speeches and a "mostly" holiday-themed Table Topics session, we all left the meeting feeling inspired. Eileen and Chelsea each evaluated speeches from members of Old Bridge Toastmasters, and Colin served as the Ah/Um Counter for the meeting. All guests participated in table topics. The Traveling Gavel is temporarily at iCIMS Headquarters in Matawan, NJ. Thanks for a great time! Eileen Kern

Emily Cohen of Staten Island - Liberty Toastmasters Club gave a speech on her vision for her HPL project. This involves bringing The Traveling Gavel to Staten Island from New Jersey, which has been done, and having it captured by Area 13 clubs, one from the next, until it completes the circuit and returns to New Jersey. Considering that Business Leaders Toastmasters did its capture just two days after Staten Island - Liberty captured the gavel, we have to say that the Traveling Gavel is really moving right along!

The Toastmaster for the evening was Uday Bhoopalam. Uday and the rest of the club were very welcoming and immediately made us all feel at home. Congratulations to Elise Lenhart on completion of her Ice Breaker speech! James Meredith agreed to evaluate Elise's speech about her recent move to NJ and her line of work, which is to help people get in touch with their inner self through flotation tanks.

Eric Moss gave us the word of the day, OPTIMAL, then shared the quote of the day, "Never inhibit yourself by the seemingly impossible." From there he put his words into action by doing the seemingly impossible, which was to bend a metal rod employing his physical and mental strengths to show us that through inner strength humans are capable of amazing things.

Uday then shared some additional quotes, one of which was, Love is for the heart, as the sun is for the flower.

Uday then decided to put us through the agonizing, Who am I? routine where we had to tell The Carpe Diem members about ourselves. Of course, this is really fun as we get to learn more about each other than we would have just by attending the meeting.

Bin Zhao led us through the Table Topics session with questions such as,What kind of trouble did you get into as a child that you feel is funny now? and What career would you recommend to someone going off to college? Rajendra Nath gave a very nice speech on the person he most respects, his father, and why.

Raj kept track and shared the times of the speakers, all of whom were within the allotted times. Patricia Wecht explained to the various speakers where they went astray with their ah, um and so and you know Overall, the nights speakers did very well.

The meetings General Evaluator, Mary Eckel, wrapped up the formal part of the meeting with a big Thank you! to the Carpe Diem Toastmasters club and stated how much she enjoyed the visit.

The meeting ended with Uday calling the evenings guests to the front and unexpectedly threw a question at us saying he would hand over the gavel if we answered correctly. This really got the nerves jumping. The question turned out to be an easy one to answer after which Uday gladly handed over the prize, the Traveling Gavel.

In all, the evening spent with the Carpe Diem Toastmasters was full of laughter and inspiration. It was interesting to see how another club operates, what we have in common as well as the differences.

We look forward to welcoming the Toastmaster club who comes to Flanders to Grab the Traveling Gavel!

President Tina described that it was the 1 year anniversary for Toasting on the Farm. They had a delicious cake to commemorate the occasion. The travelling gavel was prominently displayed. Theresa Yarosh was Toastmaster. She controlled the meeting and made sure the meeting ran smoothly. There were two speakers: one concentrating on CC#6 "Today is Your Special Day".. Superbly she described all of the many special personal and historical things have happened on this day and throughout history. It was an enjoyable and happy presentation.
The next presenter spoke from an Advanced Manual Persuasive Speaking and her speech was "Zappos". By the end, we all wanted to work for them , except that they were in Nevada. Odlly, I have the distingct need to buy shoes online today.
Tim our able bodied, Table Topicsmaster, asked us what our middle names or nicknames were. He addressed the speakers by their names as he asked some fabulously funny and enlightening questions.
The evaluators were thoughtful in their feedback of the presentations. Martin was the timer. All in all, it was fun to visit Mearsk and Toasting on the Farm Toastmasters. President Tina thanked all of the guests that came and was pleased to have a good attendance at the meeting.

After holding the gavel for less than 6 days, Cosmopolitan Toastmasters was raided by three members of their sibling club, Murray Hill Speakers at Alcatel-Lucent in Murray Hill, NJ. Amanda Salvarani gave an excellent evaluation of Speaker #1, and MHSC President Andrew Smith addressed the meeting with a message of friendship and camaraderie. The fourth member of MHSC at the meeting was Brian Cort, who is also a member of Cosmopolitan, so he was both raider and raidee. Brian gave Evaluation #2.

MHSC meets on the First, Third, and Fifth Wednesdays of every month at 600-700 Mountain Avenue, New Providence NJ 07974. It's an awesome club! Come see us!

FIVE Members of Cosmopolitan Toastmasters, plus one Junior member Andre Hance, Age 8, raided the Northern Stars meeting on Wednesday January 20 and made off with the Gavel, despite menacing words from Steve Lord, Northern Stars' President and noted authority on Alien Abduction. The Toastmaster was Brian Cort, who being a member of both Cosmopolitan and Northern Stars, was in the unusual position of being both Raider and Raidee. Jorge Aguilar gave the invocation, Olga Hance served as Timer, Tom Hance as Grammarian, and Roopa Rudrapatna gave the Joke of the Day, Word of the Day, and served as evaluator #2B - Content.

The meeting was a rousing success, and revolved around the theme "GROWTH!" The District 83 Traveling Gavel may be 6 inches longer than it was just the other day. At the conclusion of the NYLIM Toastmasters meeting on July 14th a kerfuffle broke out and the Meandering Mallet was subjected to a tug-o-war. Stalwart NYLIM members refused to yield and marauding Hackettstown Toastmasters became physical. Tempers had flared earlier when Hackettstown VP-E Jim Birnbaum, serving as Topicmaster of the NYLIM meeting, called NYLIM President Don Osmanski a milksop for going 59 seconds on a Table Topic. Later, Hackettstown President Bill Watras, serving as Ah-Counter, cited NYLIM member John Peterson for 137 ahs and the benches cleared. Caught in the middle of the Great Gavel Grab was Lois Steward, Immediate past President of the Hackettstown club AND current VP-Education of the NYLIM club. In the melee Steward was "hammered" senseless and trampled to death underfoot. NYLIM Toastmasters is accepting applications for VP-Education.
